All things Eczema & how we can help

Eczema is a vastly complex topic that is often misunderstood as there is an array of confusing information. The treatment of eczema need not be difficult and self-education is the key to understanding how to do this.

Why do people develop eczema?

There are different types of eczema, and eczema is due to an inheritance of specific genes; most of us carry this gene, environmental factors such as diet, stress, health and digestive issues, allergies and a faulty skin barrier that is caused by "filaggrin" loss that leads to the breakdown of our skin barrier function. If our skin barrier function is compromised, this also allows for the entry of allergens, which triggers inflammatory and allergic immune responses, such as atopic eczema and allergies.

So, what is filaggrin?

It's an essential protein our bodies need for skin hydration and maintaining our skin barrier, and it is responsible for how well the skin retains moisture and hydration. Those with eczema and allergy-prone skin are deficient in the gene responsible for making filaggrin, resulting in a shortage of this protein, making the skin barrier vulnerable and more susceptible to water loss and dehydration.

Diet and how it affects your skin

Diet is a significant factor, and consulting a professional to get to the underlying causes can be helpful, as you may need to explore a supervised elimination diet to see what foods may be a trigger; certain nuts, fruits and vegetables can be problematic for eczema. However, natural or artificial sugar should be avoided as sugar equals inflammation, like dairy food, seed oils, and all processed food. Even in small amounts, these foods can trigger an immune response on the skin.

Emotional health and how it affects your skin

Stress and anxiety are some of the most significant contributing factors to eczema, which is why over the last two years, many people who have never been eczema sufferers before have suddenly developed adult eczema.
